Incredible ability to adapt to a new environment

The service industry, including the hotel and restaurant industries tend to be avoided by job-seekers because of their reputations for irregular working hours and work that is harder than it first appears. In the midst of continuing labor shortages, we wanted to hire staff who would become assets to our company, and decided to take advantage of the specified skilled worker system.

When hiring foreign workers, we were worried at first about not being able to communicate due to cultural differences or language barriers. However, our four current workers have all proven to be very adaptable to their new environment and eager to learn the Japanese language. We are very happy to see that they are performing far above our original expectations.

Cheerful smiles make them popular with customers

Our specified skilled workers are in charge of general restaurant service operations, mainly focusing on customer service and cooking at the hotel and restaurants. At the workplace a team leader guides operations, and our foreign staff have fit right in with the Japanese staff, who follow up with them when necessary. Seeing them communicating with the people around them as they smoothly complete their tasks with a smile is very encouraging.

We get many long-term and repeat guests at our hotel and more than a few of them are kind enough to remember the names and faces of our staff. Guests often say to our specified skilled workers, “It’s good to see you again, how have you been?”, or “Your Japanese is really good,” and seeing how glad they are to be noticed and praised makes us feel that we made the right decision in hiring them.

Letting them know that they are valued

Many of our employees are veteran workers who have been with us for a long time, but they have been have been much more considerate of and friendly with the specified skilled workers than we could have imagined, even including staff from other departments. Although our hotel’s hiring criteria are based on N3 of the JLPT, the foreign workers are very proactive about conversing with the Japanese staff in Japanese, and they often enjoy chatting together during their breaks. However, there are occasionally times when they don’t understand instructions in Japanese and we too are learning through trial and error how to communicate with them more effectively.

Specified skilled workers have come to work in Japan with a purpose, and we want to give them work that is rewarding and makes them feel glad to work at our hotel. To that end, we place importance on communicating to them that they are needed and valued. We think all companies that accept specified skilled workers should treat them as indispensable members of their staff, and let them know that they are valued. That will be sure to give them motivation in their work.

Customers praising my Japanese skills and my smile make the job worthwhile

THET HTET ZUN

Having studied abroad in Japan, I decided to work at Hotel Saito in order to improve my Japanese skills by working in customer service. When customers praise my Japanese skills or my smile it makes me happy and makes my job worthwhile.

My goal is to open a nice coffee shop in Japan

THAW TAR HTUN

To work in Japan, it’s important to learn the basics step by step and just keep trying without giving up. My goal is to use what I have learned at this job to open a laid-back and charming little coffee shop here in Japan, and I’m working my hardest to achieve that goal.
