Creating a workplace where multinational staff can work comfortably creates a virtuous cycle

Corporate Information
  • Business activities: The cultivation, processing, and sale of salmon and trout, and the sale of other fish
  • Number of employees: 45 (Narita Plant No. 2)
  • Number of specified skill workers: 6 (4 from Vietnam, 2 from Myanmar)

The purpose of accepting specified skilled foreign workers

Our factory is located in Narita City in Chiba Prefecture, near the international airport, where there are many foreign residents. Because of that, we have been recruiting spouses of Japanese residents and foreign workers with permanent residence ever since the plant was opened. Currently, foreign workers account for about 80% of the people working in the plant, including six specified skilled workers. The seafood processing industry involves a lot of washing and standing, and it is hardly a popular industry to work in. A talent shortage is also predicted due to the aging of full-time employees, and so we started accepting specified skilled workers last year in order to help them grow into active, relatively young core workers in the workplace. We hope to have specified skilled workers who are willing to work full time, are very eager to work, can start working right away, and will prosper along with our company.

The working and living conditions of specified skilled foreign workers

Currently, our six specified skilled workers are in charge of basic tasks for processing salmon, including boning, cutting meat, measuring fillets, and packing. After they have become accustomed to the process, we want to also entrust them with setting up and operating machinery in the assembly line, performing maintenance, and other tasks. All six workers have not missed a day of work and have never been late or left early. They make sure they are prepared five minutes before the start of the workday and work their hardest cheerfully and positively, serving as a model for all of our other foreign employees. Our foreign workers also help each other out with veterans diligently putting care into both their work and their daily lives. Ever since we began hiring specified skilled workers, we have been happy and surprised that they have provided a positive stimulus for our other foreign workers, encouraged everyone in the workplace to follow the rules, and improved the overall atmosphere.

Follow-up system

Right now, we have foreign workers from seven different countries working in our plant. In order to build a diverse group of foreign workers, we focus on D&I* (Diversity and Inclusion) training. After the recruitment process, in addition to doing safety and hygiene training, we make it clear that we do not accept bullying or discrimination based on skin color or nationality. We provide daily support for specified skilled workers through Japanese classes, calligraphy, and other activities. We also provide COVID-19 vaccinations in the workplace. The vaccinations were received especially well. They were able to take them without worries after we helped them fill out the medical questionnaires. Recently, people who want to work as a specified skilled worker have been posting information on the Internet or exchanging information with others on social media, and there have been more people discovering and applying for our company. We think we have created a virtuous cycle by creating an environment that is easy for foreign people to work in, thereby attracting even more ambitious workers.

Foreign specified skilled workers work, gain knowledge from Japanese manufacturing industries, and build up skills and funds to fulfill their dreams. They contribute to our company by being excellent staff. We believe that the specified skilled worker system provides benefits by building this win-win relationship. Moving forward, we want to provide as much support as we can to help them fulfill their dreams.

Interview with a specified skilled worker

It is fun to work with people from many different countries

Thae Thae Su

Working is fun. All of the people I work with are friendly, and I can ask them about anything I don't understand without being nervous. Being able to work together with people from many countries is also fun. I want to work hard in Japan and open a store in Myanmar in the future.

It's easy to work in this environment, and I can work with peace of mind

Le Khac Tuan

The workplace has many different machines and equipment, and I think it's easy to work here. Other Vietnamese workers who have been here longer taught me how to do my tasks in a way that is easy to understand, so I can work with peace of mind. I'm learning Japanese and studying various parts of Japanese culture by talking to my Japanese colleagues.
